Deborah Hale

Deborah Hale is a young, attractive journalist who comes to cover a film being made at Pine Hollow Stables and falls in love with its owner, Max Regnery. Although Deborah is a confirmed city slicker and quite nervous around horses, she can’t deny her attraction to the rugged, outdoorsy ex-equestrian. Because Deborah has never been on a horse before and looks every inch the typical, independent career woman from the bright lights, the Saddle Club girls worry that Max will abandon Pine Hollow for his new love. When they realize how much Deborah means to Max, they pull out all stops to help the romance along, even teaching Deborah to ride and helping to organize their wedding.

In this second series, Deborah and Max return as a newly married couple – with Deborah still getting used to life in the country and running a stable.

Cathy Godbold ( Plays Deborah )

Being warmly hugged as soon as you arrive at work each day doesn’t happen at many jobs but it is the norm for Cathy Godbold. “The three young stars treat me like I am their older sister, coming to me for advice and telling me about teenage crushes but the best part of working with so many children are the hugs I get all day," she says.

Cathy grew up in a showbiz atmosphere. Her mother is a well-known Australian television and radio personality and her father is a television director. “The world of entertainment was almost inbred; I was surrounded by it all my life, going to the television studios with my mother and always hearing stories about the industry. I always knew I wanted to be part of it,” Cathy says.

Cathy trained well for her career. She studied acting for many years, did three years of classical ballet, tap and jazz and won a singing scholarship to the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts. Cathy was the youngest singer ever to be accepted into this college but had to cut her course short when she was offered a role in the Australian television series “Home and Away.”

Although Cathy is still passionate about dancing and attends the ballet often, she has abandoned her singing career. “I gave up singing years ago; I was doing a solo at the Logies (the Australian television industry’s award night) and the sound system died. When it started to work again there was bad distortion and my voice sounded dreadful. It was every performer’s nightmare come true and I haven’t yet got my confidence back to sing in public,” she tells us.

In The Saddle Club, Cathy’s character Deborah was the one who proposed to Max. Would she consider not waiting to be asked and popping the question herself? “No way; I am very much single and also very old fashioned in some things. I would wait for the bloke to ask me. And besides my mother would die if I did that,” she says.

Deborah was very much the city girl and not comfortable around horses. But because she loves Max, she put that aside and tried to fit in. In this series she is attempting a horse ride and for her, that’s a big step. At first she was very much the female professional lady, wearing power suits and high heels. Now she is wearing jeans and become a lot more down to earth. She adores the kids and, as a journalist, finds some good stories just being around The Saddle Club.

The Saddle Club™ series stars three heroines, Stevie, Carole and Lisa, who form The Saddle Club™ at the Pine Hollow Stables. Each character has a distinctly different personality but all share an equal love of horses and a strong loyalty to each other.
